Playstyles For Terriers
Learn What Playstyle Works Best For Your Puppy
Puppy socialization is crucial to your puppy’s development. Dogs who receive positive and thorough socialization as puppies are more likely to grow into healthy, friendly adult dogs. Something that can be incredibly useful to ensure your puppy has positive socialization is to figure out your puppy’s playstyle. Of course, the best way to figure this out is through observation. However, you can make some educated guesses as to your puppy’s playstyle based on their breed, as playstyles are often dependent, in part, on breed type.
Playstyles For Terrier Puppies
Terriers are hunters. These puppies were bred specifically to eradicate rodents and vermin and chase small game. Terriers can vary widely but are generally divided into short-legged, long-legged, and stocky varieties. Typical characteristics include a high prey drive and cleverness.
Dog breeds in this group include the Schnauzer, Scottie, Airedale, Jack Russell Terrier, and others. For the stocky/muscular breeds in this group, body slamming and wrestling are both common playstyles. The smaller dogs in the group will also commonly engage in wrestling, though there is enough diversity within the group that it can be difficult to pin down a specific playstyle for the entire group.
Smaller terriers often seem to either have no concept of their diminutive size or exhibit a Napoleon complex so well-developed that it drives them to stand up to dogs that are multiple times larger than they are. This can be a challenge in a playgroup, and it is often the case that a terrier will either need to be carefully placed in a playgroup or will simply ignore every dog in a large group.
Of course, the most important thing is to observe your puppy. While breed can act as a starting point for figuring out your puppy’s playstyle, direct observation will give you more specific information about how your puppy likes to romp around.
